The Discover magazine published an article titled "Laughter" in its April 2003 issue. The article attempted to explain happiness from a materialistic perspective, drawing on neuroembryologist Robert Provine"s views. It was claimed that that the brainstem coordinating the muscle movements in laughter was primitive and that laughter benefited evolution.

DISCOVER"S ERROR ON THE ORIGINS OF LAUGHTER

The article in question was investigating the origin of laughter according to the evolution theory. The amateurism of the article was thinly disguised under a scientific appearance and represented a good example of the flawed logic inherent in evolutionist reasoning. In this article, we will expose the inconsistencies in explaining laughter with evolutionist reasoning.

The article, contained no scientific or rational propositions and went no further than a dogmatic evolution propaganda. Published in the name of Steven Johnson, the article was constructed on evolutionist biases and therefore set out repeatedly from wrong starting points leading to irrational conclusions.

LAUGHTER"S BENEFIT TO EVOLUTION ERROR

For instance, it was attempted to explain the cause of laughter from an evolutionist standpoint. The article claimed that laughter helps social bonds strengthen. In the author"s view, man is an animal not expected to have feelings. According to this evolutionist way of thinking, every behavior and every task is done for the purpose of achieving a better and easier life. By the same perverted logic, joking with friends and conversing with other members of society is an animal need.

The evolution theory identifies man with animals and it therefore considers man only in terms of animal needs. However, there is no evidence supporting this view.

THE ORDER AND CONSCIOUS CONTROL OF THE BRAIN CANNOT BE EXPLAINED BY COINCIDENCES

Another flawed premise of the article in Discover is that everything is reducible to matter. Accordingly, man cannot have feelings because feelings are generated by the molecules produced in the brain. This forms the basis of the materialist - evolutionists" life philosophy. Everything is the consequence of the interaction between atoms. Matter is absolute and the soul does not exist.

It is necessary to make a point here. Every human function has a reference in the nervous system but objective thinking people will face the incredible design of the nervous system.

The brain stem and the brain cortex control various vital functions of our body. Thanks to the faultless functioning of the central control mechanism and to the perfect compatibility of its components, we can exist without interruptions. A cluster of nerve cells in the brain stem serve as our center for breathing. Without we being conscious of it, even while we are sleeping or running, these nerve cells determine the rate at which our lungs fill with air and are emptied again and provide the oxygen necessary for our cells. This organization and coordination of cells is an example of responsibility, which is impossible for the cells themselves to shoulder. The continuity of the human brain is guaranteed by a power higher than the human mind. Clearly, the source of this power, consciousness and awareness is All-Mighty God.

THE ERROR OF CALLING THE BRAIN STEM PRIMITIVE

There is another gross error in the article. The writer misinterprets the brainstem"s functions that control laughter by calling it the "most ancient region of the nervous system". This is wholly wrong. At every moment our heart rate, breathing and other vital functions are controlled automatically by the specialized neurons located in the brain stem. These vital functions, from when we are born to when we exhaust our last breath, are controlled by a consciousness. In the case of damage to the primitive brainstem, death is certain and unavoidable. When in medicine brain death is mentioned it refers to the death of the brain stem. The death of the brain stem is equivalent to the somatic death. It means the end of the existence of a person as defined by the law and only then it becomes possible to remove organs and tissue for transplantation. It is nothing but a Darwinist bias to call such an important area with so many vital functions primitive.

LAUGHTER IS NOT CONTROLLED BY MAN

The physiology of laughter is outside of our control. When we laugh, we take regular, fast and rhythmic breaths by a series of complex neural actions. Laughter is in no way under the control of man and we don"t even know about the exchange of chemical substances between the nerve cells in the brain. We don"t know the chemical formulae, the relevant connections between receptors or how to reverse or control these functions, but we nevertheless laugh, joke and get happy.

Feelings are created by the interaction of molecules. This is a scientific fact. However, claiming that this interaction is coincidental or that the molecules or receptor molecules became compatible with one another as a consequence of coincidences is wholly wrong. It is by a superior order and a design beyond the limits of the human mind. This is a reality we experience every time we laugh or get happy and is also a proof for the existence of Almighty God. As stated in the Qur"an, it is God Who makes us experience the feelings of laughter and happiness:

""It is He Who brings about both laughter and tears; that it is He Who brings about both death and life.""  (Qur"an, 53: 43-44)
