The hadith notes that many people will approach Hazrat Mahdi (as), but that the great majority of them will be eliminated. Hazrat Mahdi (as) will be engaged in a difficult intellectual struggle requiring great self-sacrifice. He will be subjected to great pressure, particularly in the early part of his struggle. Many of Hazrat Mahdi’s (as) followers will naturally be eliminated in this environment, and will consist of just a few very select people.
