The living beings that secrete adhesive material under water: Foraminiferas

Why do foraminiferas have a vital importance for the life in ocean?

What are the traits of the water-resistant adhesive material they secrete?

What kind of products do scientists try to develop by taking this glue as an example?

What was the explanation Darwin made about foraminiferas 150 years ago?

The Originator of the heavens and earth. When He decides on something, He just says to it, ‘Be!’ and it is. (Surat al-Baqara, 117)

Foraminiferas

Foraminiferas are of  vital importance for under ocean life. When the calcium carbonate shells of these living beings come together, a sort of “carbon pool” form which suck the carbon in the water. Scientists are very much interested in this trait of the living being since it opens new horizons to researchers in terms of balancing the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere. However this unique structure of this living being is not limited to being a guide for scientists in regulating the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere. Research have revealed another striking trait of this being; foraminiferas produce a natural adhesive material.

The water-resistant adhesive secreted by foraminiferas

With their pseudopods, fine strands of cytoplasm that branch and merge to form a dynamic net, the shelled foraminifera are different from rhizopods. In some species shells are made up of calcium carbonate. The shell has a big hole opening to outside. In many of them together with the big hole there are many small holes. Pseudopods protrude from these holes and are used to catch nutrients. In some species shells are made up of sand that are buried into a kind of secretary material similar to gelatin, sponge protrusions or similar unfamiliar materials. The living being glues these unfamiliar materials and pseudopods to itself with the help of a special adhesive secretive material.

The foraminifera adhesive material is more complex than thought, the basis being represented by a protein mix, coated with sticky carbohydrates. Cells of the living being secrete adhesive components from various organelles to the membrane-like hole on the shell as a result of which this component turns into an adhesive fiber.

When scientists dissected this material, they astonishingly witnessed its superior quality. The research of the glue produced by Foraminifera when building their shells could lead to the synthesis of stronger biological adhesives, extremely necessary in fields like dentistry, neurological surgery and the development of artificial arms and limbs.

Research on foraminifera...

Research on foraminifers is carried out by the United States Antarctic Program supported by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States.

Sam Browser, for the New York State Department of Health’s Qadsworth Center, has been studying Antarctica’s Foraminifera for 20 years.

National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a society engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. The Antarctic Program supported by this society employs 1900 people. An important point deserves mention while reading this article about foraminiferas. These institutions that enlist top scientists, engineers and other experts devote tremendous resources to learn about the unique traits of a living being the size of a thumbnail. The precious information acquired from this living being may be put to use in many fields for the welfare of humanity.

And in your creation and all the creatures He has spread about there are Signs for people with certainty. (Surat al-Jathiyya, 4)

What is the greenhouse effect?

The atmosphere has the ability to transmit light and capture the heat. This trait of heating and insulation is called the greenhouse effect. Sun rays transmit the atmosphere and warm the surface of the Earth. The gasses in the atmosphere capture some of the heat on the Earth and prevent heat loss on the surface of the Earth.

Allah creates with no prior example

Foraminiferas is only one of the millions of living beings that place the theory of evolution in an impasse. It is impossible to explain the traits of this living being from the Darwinist perspective. Foraminifers are the obvious manifestations of the intelligence and might in the way Allah creates. Allah creates with no prior examples. Just like other beings that He creates, foraminifers also have no prior example. In the Qur’an Allah relates His infinite might of creating as follows:

We showed them no Sign which was not greater than the one before it.” (Surat az-Zukhruf, 48)

About Foraminifers …

They are single-celled shelled living beings that have remained unchanged for 550 million years…

They mostly live in seas, a few species in lakes.

Foraminifers, each having a different shape of tremendous beauty when observed under microscope, are only a few examples of the unique artistry Allah displays in nature.

Although the biggest is the size of a nail, foraminiferas can catch other living beings much greater than their own sizes.

Though foraminifers are mostly found in mild regions of north hemisphere their fossils are distributed in every corner of the world. The shells of this living being that have existed on Earth for 550 million years have constituted the limestone layers of today. There is unlimited number of foraminifers living in our day.
